Gerco de Ruijter' s photography and the Dutch landscape - they appear to be
the perfect match. Paging the book with the overview of the photographs De
Ruijter shot while flying his camera-kite between 1993 and 2003, one cannot
escape being struck by the unique characteristics of the Dutch landscape: all
ditches have been dug along a ruler, all trees are geometrically arranged, all
groynes and breakwaters are dead straight.

Anyone who longs for an innocent view of the world, for an experience that is prior to cultural influence, is bound to be disappointed. Right from our very first perceptions, cultural codes are imprinted in us that bring about order in the initially dazzling array of impressions. Later, as adults, we sometimes hope to be able to regain something of that original open-mindedness by visiting exotic spots or by exposing ourselves to untrodden nature. In fact, however, we are trying to jump outside our own shadow, because the very desire for such experiences of landscape is itself culturally determined. The term 'landscape', is of Dutch origin and has been . . . . . . more> Petran Kockelkoren Nederlandse versie - De bevlogen blik . . . . . . Dutch> |

curator Dutch Photo Institute (NFI), Rotterdam Watching the landscapes by Rotterdam photographer Gerco de Ruijter (Vianen, 1961) I am gliding above the earth. The dark surf´s cloudy line subtly merges with the sand´ soft curves. A line of dots is visible with crystal clarity: footsteps, ending in a person´s long shadow. Gerco de Ruijter shoots from the sky but always with both feet on the ground. He chooses a good position, checks which way the wind is blowing and prepares to fly his kite with a camera attached to it. Controlled from the ground it takes pictures of creeks, soil patterns, meadows and tree plants . . . . . . more> Zweven in een stille wereld . . . . . . Dutch> |

A row of small, rectangular photographs hanging on the wall. Pictures taken trom the air. A small piece of land with water alongside, with a meadow, a wood, the pattern of freshly ploughed earth. From above, the plough furrows are almost abstract - the precise, mathematical care of the farmer. The woods have a sense of space of their own. The trees, through the effect of the perspective, seem a tunnel wanting to bore into the earth. The water's surface shows the reflection of the clouds, so I am looking up and looking down at the same time. It is unmistakably the Netherlands. I fly through the air and the familiar landscape unfolds beneath me. There is depth. I am in a place I have never been before. I see Holland for the first time. I am flying. . . . . . . more> Esther Polak, 2001. Nederlandse versie . . . . . . Dutch> |

Looking down, the world without horizon or perspective becomes pattern and color. It takes time to reorientate and interpret the single plane of the ground. In painting this looking down bas been a relatively unusual device. Views from above are usually situated with some foreground detail to locate them, as though having the viewpoint of a hillside or, occasionally, a high building. Although there are novelties, the picture made as though from the imagined view of a bird was not more than an anecdote. With the invention of photography in the nineteenth century, added to these bird's-eye paintings was the curiosity of pictures made from balloons floating above the city. However, the rhetoric of these novelties was not developed until the early part of the twentieth century, when it became briefly part of a larger and radical program. . . . . . . read more> |
